Krabi Krabong ![]() Greg Nelson, reveals the rarely seen, deadly art of Krabi Krabong ![]() ![]() Krabi-Krabong is a traditional martial arts weapon system of Thailand, which is still practiced today. Students who first master the empty hand techniques of Muay Thai then graduate to the deadly weapons training of the Krabi Krabong. The Krabi Lrabong is often a blended compilation of two individual weapons: •"Krabi" (sword)•"Krabong" (staff) In modern day Thailand, Krabi-Krabong is often used for cultural display at festivals and celebrations. However, on rare occasions the outsider may glimpse Krabi Krabong fighting matches, which are held within a marked ring or circle. The fight is preceded by the "Wai Kruu" ceremony and is accompanied by a traditional Thai musical ensemble. Krabi Krabong techniques are blended with Thai boxing strikes, joint locks and throwing techniques. Sharpened weapons of the Krabi Krabong are used with great precision and agility during the match. Combatants will test their skill and endurance until someone surrenders or the winner of the contest is decided by judges. The matches are exciting to watch and injuries are surprisingly uncommon when held between highly trained warriors. |
